Best way to get to Kiruna?
On all our tours, necessary transfers between your accommodation in Kiruna, Jukkasjärvi, or Poikkijärvi and our home base are included in the tour. Transfers from Kiruna airport or train station are also covered!
To get to Kiruna, you usually need to travel via Stockholm, with options to take the train, fly, or drive your own car.
Choose the train:
If you’re considering taking the train, Vy’s night train operates between Stockholm and Narvik, with two departures daily. Norrtåg also offers several departures from Sundsvall to Kiruna. Discounted prices are available for children, youths, and students. The travel time by train is around 16 hours, and tickets can be booked up to 3 months prior to departure.
Arrive by plane:
Eurowings operates a direct route between Düsseldorf and Kiruna on Wednesdays and Saturdays during February and March 2024. Other airlines, including Scandinavian Airlines and Norwegian Airlines, offer flights between Stockholm and Kiruna. The travel time by plane is approximately 1.5 hours.
Travel by car or bus:
Driving to Kiruna is a scenic 1,300 km journey from Stockholm. Be mindful of wildlife on the roads and the long distances between gas stations. The E10 passes through Kiruna, and you can connect via the E8 (Finland) or E6 (Norway). For buses, Länstrafiken Norrbotten operates services between Kiruna, Haparanda, and Narvik. Buses are a budget-friendly option.
What should I bring for my tour?
We provide the outer layer of clothing (overalls, winter boots, thick hats, and mittens) for all our tours.
For all multiple-day tours, bring:
- Long underwear
- Warm pullovers
- Several pairs of warm socks
- Finger gloves
- Sunglasses and sunscreen (for March and April tours)
- Extra shoes (for indoors at the cabin)
- Leisure clothing for the cabin
- Rucksack or travel bag
- Scarf or buff
- Headlight and sleeping bag liner
- Small thermos bottle
- A book or card game
For mountain or snowmobile tours: Add goggles to your packing list.
For short and day tours: Wear warm layers under the outer clothing. Check the weather and dress accordingly. Temperatures may differ significantly between Kiruna and our tour location.
How to dress in the cold?
The key to staying warm is layering your clothes loosely. Each layer traps air, which helps insulate your body. For socks, wear a thinner pair under a thicker pair. For cold weather (-20°C or below), wear 4-5 layers on your upper body, including long-sleeved shirts, thin pullovers, and vests.
We provide outer layers like overalls, winter boots, hats, and mittens. Be sure to wear something to cover your head and choose fabrics like wool or fleece, avoiding cotton, which loses warmth when wet.
For guests with glasses: In cold weather, glasses may fog up. Consider wearing contact lenses or using goggles over your glasses for better visibility.
What else can I do in Kiruna and where can I stay?
Besides dogsledding and snowmobiling, Kiruna offers plenty of cultural and nature experiences. For more activities, visit the Kiruna Lapland website. You can also find accommodation options ranging from cozy camps to luxury hotels.
For multi-day tours, accommodation at Mushers Lodge the night before and after the tour is usually included. Check the tour description for details or contact us for additional accommodation.
Can children join the tours?
We warmly welcome families with children of all ages. However, for multi-day tours, the minimum recommended age is 16 years (18 years for certain mountain tours). Snowmobile tours require participants to be at least 18 years old and hold a valid driver’s license.
For private family tours, younger children (10-12 years) are welcome, but for shorter tours, children of all ages are accepted.
What are the terms of booking and cancellation?
The cancellation fee is always 20% of the total amount, but the fee can be used for a different tour at a different date.
Between 60-30 days before departure 25% of the total amount
29-15 days before departure 50% of the total amount
14-7 days before departure 65% of the total amount
6 days before departure or now-show 100% of the total amount
Why do we need to know if you weigh more than 100kg?
We need to know if you weigh more than 100 kg in order to distribute the weight evenly across the sleds and dogs.
This ensures the safety and efficiency of the team, allowing both the dogs and sleds to be properly balanced for the load.
